...How to make a patu…

Equipment Requirements:
  • A piece of pallet ( a piece of wood any size, but thick is better )
  • A saw
  • Crayon (any colour)
  • A bandsaw
  • A Chisel
  • A mallet ( if you're making a patu as a hook)
  • A drill ( to drill a hole at the bottom of the Patu)
  • 3 sizes of rasp file
  • A sanding wheel
  • Vice (to hold the patu in so that it will be easier to work on)
  • Flax ( to be tied in the hole at the bottom of the Patu)
  • Paper
  • Pencil
  • Paint brush and paint ( to draw the designs on the patu)

...Instructions…

* Cut the pallet (a piece of wood) with your hand saw

* Design your Patu on the wood with your crayon

* Cut out the design with the bandsaw carefully, when you’re finished cutting out the design get ready to use your chisel.

* Put your design into the Vice (a vice is something that holds up the design) make sure it’s tight and secure in the vice

* Chisel your way round the sides of the wood. When the sides are kind of smooth use the sanding wheel.

* Shape the patu, by moving the patu where you want to shape it with the sanding wheel. Make sure when you’re using the sanding wheel don’t make little ripples in the patu because it will be harder for you to work on. If you do make ripples in the patu use the sandpaper to get them out.

* Drill carefully at the bottom of your patu and drill until the hole is gone right through. The bottom part of your patu it where you hold it

* Now you have finished making your patu, create designs on your patu. Outline your patu on a piece of paper and draw with your pencil an effective design that best represents your patu and your whakapapa.

* Paint your design onto your patu, leave to dry.

* Say a karakia that is suitable for cutting flax. Plait three pieces of flax together and thread into the hole at the end of your patu.

You now have your Patu!!!
